Our Starry-Skied Seaside Wedding in Islamorada, Florida

It’s been almost four months since this beautiful, happy day and we + our #rollinghome have lived in five countries, traversed the sea 3 times and driven over 5,300 miles… and we’re only getting started! If you had told teenage me that after getting married I would be moving abroad to live in a van with my husband… I’m pretty sure I would have done whatever I could to speed up the process.

We’ve had moments of immense bliss, impossible romance, incredible beauty, utter frustration, confusion, discomfort, clarity, peace and chaos – often times experiencing all those in a single day! Despite everything, the one thing that keeps us grounded and transforms our little van into a home, is the unbreakable love we share for one another.

Our wedding day was nestled between our first year of life on the road (which we spent traveling across the US + Canada + Iceland) and our first year of vanlife abroad… of which we had no solid plans, just two one-way tickets to London five days after becoming husband and wife. A week into our road trip we found our dream wedding venue, a stunning beach house in Islamorada, Florida, and from then on out all arrangements, planning, crafting, even dress shopping, had to be done from the van..! I even hand/van-made our wedding invitations on a rainy day in Montreal using Canadian maps and watercolors!

We were lucky enough to have two incredible photographers, THE Abie Livesay and Rick Gomez, who was in the delivery room the day I was born. Between the two of them some of the sweetest moments of our lives were captured and for that, we are forever grateful. So, without any further hesitation, we present to you a special collection of memories from our very special day, from sunrise to moon fall:

For days and weeks leading up to our wedding the weather had been extremely unpredictable. Rain, wind and freezing temperatures, it was completely out of the norm of the perfect blue and 72 weather Floridians live for in January. With the entire weekend’s events being outside on the beach, our wedding planner + family nearly begged us to get a tent, but after many prayers and the help of a few hopeful friends, we decided to go “no tent” and hope for the best. Well, the best is what we got:

And then came time for the ceremony.

Life has few moments as rich and powerful as this. Drew and I reminded each other to be conscious of this throughout the day, making sure to honor and feel every ounce of God’s grace and goodness given.

We escaped for a mini shoot at The Moorings and sat on the same tree we were on when we decided to have our wedding on this little slice of heaven.

Just about everything was DIY, from the baby’s breath bouquets, to the wine bottle flower arrangements, wooden arrows, marquee LOVE letters, map-collaged card box, my guarder, our playlist and the 8,850 white lights that were strung across the sky, creating the magical, starry-night that we will never forget:

Being that our venue was at our own seaside villa, we loved not having to worry about when we would be asked the leave. It truly allowed the night to evolve into endless fairytale it was meant to be.

One of the many highlights of our night: MUSIC. We debated what to do for a while, but with the help of Terry Joe Banjo, our incredibly multi-talented Canadian rafting guide (whom we had met just six months prior, post here), we enjoyed a night of acoustic guitar/ukelele/banjo for all of our sweetest moments, mixed with an awesome DJ who played our carefully-chosen playlist. The results were EPIC. Terry Joe didn’t stop there though, he went above and beyond, leaving us starstruck, surprising us with the most thoughtful of gifts, The Ballad of Mr and Mrs Adventure:

Terry Joe also helped me surprise Drew by playing the guitar while I serenaded him with the beginning of our first dance song, La Vie en Rose.

Then came time for the cake, sparklers, fireworks and a bonfire jam sesh which lasted until the wee hours of the night.

Our biggest piece of advice: Make sure to pause, breathe and take it all in. Weddings are truly powerful, an incredible collection of people, passion, hope, faith and love all wrapped into one little night… take little moments for yourself and together. Cherish all of it.
